Three hours from Milan Malpensa over the Maloja Pass to St. Moritz, high on the Engadine plateau.

Distance

180 km

Duration

165 min off-peak

Price

from €320 fixed

Malpensa is the shortest and cheapest way into St. Moritz, which is why guests flying in from Rome, Naples or on a low-cost carrier choose it. The chauffeur tracks the flight, meets you in arrivals with a name sign and loads the car; from the terminal doors to a Dorf or Bad address is two hours forty-five to three hours. One price, agreed before you book.

The road runs north past Como and up the Valchiavenna to Chiavenna, crosses into Switzerland at Castasegna and follows the Val Bregaglia to the foot of the Maloja. From there it is about twenty hairpins up onto the plateau, then the lakes into St. Moritz. The pass is kept open all winter; the hairpins are what demand winter tyres, and sometimes chains.

What to expect

2h45–3h from arrivals to hotel

About 180 km, traffic around Como and the Chiavenna valley permitting.

Skis carried at no extra charge

Racks and roof boxes on request; the V-Class takes seven guests with six or more cases.

Winter tyres and chains on board

Standard from 15 November to 15 April, as Italian law requires and the Maloja deserves.

€320 fixed, tolls and vignette

Italian motorway tolls and the Swiss vignette are included, and there is no surge pricing.

Tips for this route

  • Malpensa has two terminals: T1 for most scheduled carriers, T2 for low-cost flights. Send the flight number with your booking and the chauffeur meets the right one — they are a shuttle ride apart.
  • Keep passports or ID cards out of the suitcase, children included. Castasegna is a genuine Italy–Switzerland crossing, and although it is usually a wave-through, the border can still be spot-checked.
  • St. Moritz is two places: Dorf on the terrace, where most hotels are, and Bad down by the lake. Name which one plus the hotel when you book — the final kilometres are steep and largely one-way.
  • Book two to three weeks ahead for Christmas, New Year and the February White Turf weekends, when Saturday changeover traffic fills the valley. The team confirms by WhatsApp; cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need passports for this transfer?

Yes. The route crosses from Italy into Switzerland at Castasegna, so every passenger including children should carry a passport or national ID card. It is an internal Schengen border, but it is still spot-checked.

What happens if it snows on the Maloja Pass?

The Maloja is kept open through the winter and cleared regularly. We carry winter tyres and chains as standard, and in heavy snowfall the chauffeur simply allows more time on the hairpins rather than hurrying them.

My flight lands late in the evening — is that a problem?

No. Every airport run is flight-tracked and the pickup time moves automatically if you land late. The Maloja is driven after dark all winter; the chauffeur allows extra time for the climb and the price does not change.
